The “Bulletproof Coffee” cult
We first learned about “Bulletproof Coffee” from the lovely Mary Bruce.
What is Bulletproof Coffee? Basically, it’s a butter-infused coffee, derived from a traditional Tibetan yak butter tea. When Mary graciously invited us to try it out back in 2013, we had no idea what a craze it would become. Since Mary turned us onto what seems like a lovely indulgence, this beverage has developed a cult-like following. Bulletproof coffee shops have opened up around the US. You can even request this specialty at several traditional shops. Diving into the bulletproof coffee culture a bit more, we realized it’s actually quite controversial. It seems people are using it as a breakfast replacement to help in weight loss.
Say WHAT? For any Pitta, the mere thought of replacing a nourishing meal with a drink sends pangs of hunger straight into our bellies. Remember Natalie’s experience with the juice fast? Juice can arguably be an adequate meal replacement from a nutrient perspective. But what’s the deal with so-called bulletproof coffee?
The benefits of a bulletproof coffee
There are additional benefits of Bulletproof Coffee when compared to your normal brew. But would we go so far as to consider this an Elixir? Not so sure… Claimed benefits include an energy boost, sans jitters, that is also longer lasting. The added fats allow for slow absorption. Essentially, it gives you a boost without the crash. You also get a boost to mental clarity, and added bonus of nourishment of the brain and body via the saturated fats.
We here at Gather are all about indulging in moderation. For us, bulletproof coffee is just that: an indulgence.
Want to give it a go?
Mary’s Bulletproof Coffee
You will need:
Organic beans, freshly ground
Dash of cardamon, added to the coffee pre-brew
2 1/2 Tbsp ground coffee, brewed in a French Press (feel free to use other modalities)
1 heaping tablespoon of grass-fed, organic butter or ghee*
1 heaping tablespoon of organic coconut oil*
Dash of vanilla extract for flavor (we LOVE this vanilla bean grinder to create the essence without the added preservatives/chemicals)
*Note: When we are having breakfast WITH our bulletproof, we reduce the butter and oil to 1-2 teaspoons.
Blend everything up and enjoy!
