We are wounded. Our bodies, minds, and hearts carry the imprints of so many
samskaras, painful patterns we have collected in this life and maybe even in others. Have faith that there is always a safe space and a path towards healing. Your wounds are validated here. Without judgment, I offer you my hand as you scale these rocky cliffs. I encourage you to rebel. Be bold and courageous, and do it for yourself. I stand in support of you on your journey and I honor you for the distance you have already travelled. It is my mission to always be of service to you, and in the event that I fail, I will gratefully accept your words of criticism.

Years Practicing Yoga: 11
Years Teaching Yoga: 3
With training in both Baptiste Power Yoga and Therapeutic Yoga of the Viniyoga tradition, Moniqua leads a powerful and breath-centered practice with focus on awareness and fluidity in movement. Moniqua aims to create healing movement patterns and adaptive sequencing that is fully accessible to yogis of any level, with modifications for beginners and deeper postures for more advanced students.
A casual yoga practitioner for over a decade, I became committed to the practice nearly 5 years ago. I began informal instruction in the year 2013 and received my first 200-HR certification in Baptiste Power Yoga in January of 2014. Since my initial certification, I have received further training in Yoga Anatomy with the world-famous Dr. Ray Long as well as various other trainings in a wide array of styles and traditions, including AcroYoga and Aerial Yoga, receiving a certification in Aerial Yoga from Cathy Gouch of Aircat Aerial Yoga in May of 2014. I have also completed a second 230-HR training in Therapeutic Yoga. I am also Lead Trainer at the Space Yoga Institute of Health and Wellness, which runs Adaptive Yoga Teacher Trainings and other Certification Programs for healthcare professionals. I received a Leadership Certification in Y12SR (Yoga of 12-Step Recovery) from Nikki Myers in November of 2015.
In addition to being both Owner and Instructor at Space Yoga Studio, I am also an instructor of Spanish, and received my MA in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Florida in 2008. I currently teach K-8 Spanish and I have also taught college-level Spanish at various universities since 2006. The most incredible responsibility that I have ever received is that of "mother", for which I work to express gratitude daily through the love and care of one perfect and beautiful 6-year old boy.

DESCRIBE YOUR UNIQUE VALUE ADD AS A TEACHER. WHAT ABOUT YOUR STYLE MAKES YOU STAND OUT?
I believe in and adhere fiercely to authenticity. I lead with a conversational style that most people find uncommon in a the traditional yoga studio setting. I am silly, quirky, and brazenly ME. I fully advocate that each person I work with find their own unique path and I view myself as a facilitator along the way. I blatantly refuse to participate in the "guru culture". I teach from my deep conviction that each one of us already knows and possesses the truth, and that yoga is a tool for removing all that prevents us from accepting that reality.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTENTION IN BEING A PART OF THE LOCAL COLLECTIVE OF GATHERYOGA?
I am honored to be included in the list of stellar instructors who are also part of the Gather Yoga Collective. I love the platform and the ability to share what I love and what I have learned with those around me in a new and dynamic way.
WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU TO THE MAT?
Brought to my mat by a recognition of my own brokenness, I identify first as a student and second as an instructor. Being raised in poverty and exiting from a religious cult are the two things that have become the wellspring from which my entire worldview stems. My belief that yoga provides a spiritual path towards healing takes precedence in both my personal practice and my instruction. Through asana and breath work, I aim to meet each student where they are and to facilitate a heightened sense of awareness and self-knowledge. With the objective of creating space for each student to grow at his or her own pace, I typically lead with an informal, humorous, and conversational style that is not often found in the traditional studio setting.
I opened Space Yoga Studio in Augusta, Georgia in March of 2014 with the mission of bringing the empowerment and healing that I had personally experienced through yoga to others. My goal was to create a community-focused studio which made yoga accessible to practitioners of all ages, financial situations, faiths, and fitness levels. In conjunction with my philosophy of living, teaching, and practicing, I am a supporting member of Yoga Alliance, the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and the Yoga Service Council. I am also a member of 100+ Women Who Care, a nonprofit group of women in the Central Savannah River Area who bring much-needed support to charitable organizations who need it.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO TEACH?
EVERYTHING inspires me to teach. When I was a child, I always pretended to be a teacher and I think I have known from a very young age that I am a teacher at heart. I am most inspired when I am learning something new, and personal development and growth are always the motivating factors behind my teaching. I am also very deeply inspired by watching other teachers and learning from their experiences.
Opened in March of 2014, Space Yoga Studio is the first and only donation-based yoga studio in Augusta, Georgia. At Space, we believe in sharing and promoting the transformative power of yoga and making this life-changing practice accessible to everyone. Our core values of kindness, honesty, openness, and social responsibility motivate us in striving to cultivate a dynamic and non-competitive learning environment where all members feel truly integrated into a community. Space Yoga Studio has become widely known for its deep connection to the community, its vibrant and diverse membership, and its creative approach to yoga and traditional economic models.
